Hyderabad: The BRS party on Wednesday moved an adjournment motion in the Rajya Sabha demanding an immediate discussion on the controversial Godavari-Banakacherla project being undertaken by Andhra Pradesh. The party stated that the project would divert water from Telangana’s rightful share and severely harm the interests of farmers in the State.
BRS Parliamentary leader KR Suresh Reddy, along with MP Divakonda Damodar Rao, gave the notice to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, urging that regular proceedings be halted to allow for a debate on the issue. However, the motion was rejected.
The BRS MPs said the project, being built on the Godavari basin, violates inter-State water-sharing norms and is a direct threat to Telangana‘s water security.
“The Congress government in Telangana is maintaining a dangerous silence,” they said. The BRS leaders accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of sacrificing the State’s interests to stay in the good books of Andhra leadership. They warned that this silence could lead to irreversible injustice to Telangana’s farmers.
The BRS has repeatedly raised concerns about the Banakacherla project at both State and national forums. The party reiterated that it would continue to fight and protect the rights of Telangana.
