Hyderabad: Protests erupted across Telangana on Friday as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) staged demonstrations against the suspension of its senior leader and Suryapet MLA G Jagadish Reddy from the Legislative Assembly. Accusing the Congress government of suppressing the opposition, BRS leaders and activists burnt effigies and took out protest rallies, demanding immediate revocation of the suspension.
Jagadish Reddy was suspended for the entire Budget Session after allegedly making inappropriate remarks against Speaker Gaddam Prasad. However, the BRS contended that his suspension was politically motivated and aimed at silencing voices questioning the Congress government’s failures. On the occasion, BRS working president KT Rama Rao called for Statewide protests on Friday.
Accordingly, the BRS cadre organised protests at major junctions in all constituency and district headquarters across the State. They burnt the effigies of the Congress government and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Mild altercations ensued as the police intervened and attempted to foil their protests. The BRS cadre raised slogans against the Congress government and the Chief Minister.
In Medchal, a demonstration was organised in front of Swami Vivekananda statue on National Highway 44, where protesters raised slogans against Revanth Reddy. The agitation turned tense when police attempted to stop them from burning an effigy of the Chief Minister, resulting in a scuffle before the effigy was eventually set ablaze. Several leaders were briefly detained and later released.
Similar scenes unfolded in Mahabubnagar, where the BRS cadre held a protest at Shivaji Junction. They accused the Congress government of undermining democratic values and running the Assembly without an opposition. Protesters across Telangana questioned why the Congress government had failed to deliver on its election promises, citing unfulfilled assurances on farm loan waivers, Rythu Bandhu, gold schemes, pensions, and financial aid to women. The BRS vowed to intensify its agitation if Jagadish Reddy’s suspension was not revoked.
Meanwhile, former Minister V Srinivas Goud challenged the Congress government release the videos of Jagadish Reddy’s derogatory and disrespectful remarks against the Speaker for which he was suspended from the Assembly. He said the government targeted Jagadish Reddy to silence the opposition voices and also prevent smooth operation of the Assembly which otherwise could have exposed the Congress government’s inefficiency in fulfilling its electoral promises. He demanded that the government immediately revoke suspension of Jagadish Reddy.
