Siddipet: BRS-supported candidates have won the maximum number of sarpanch posts and ward member positions in Siddipet district in the second phase of gram panchayat elections, the results of which were declared by Sunday night.
The BRS won a record 125 gram panchayats out of 182, while the ruling Congress was confined to just 27 panchayats. The BJP managed to win 12 panchayats, while independents bagged 16 gram panchayats. Overall, the BRS secured nearly 69 per cent of the sarpanch posts in the second phase.
The BRS put up its strongest performance in Siddipet Assembly constituency, where it won 78 panchayats out of 91, confining the Congress and the BJP to single-digit figures. The party secured nearly 86 per cent of the sarpanch posts in the constituency. While the Congress managed to win five sarpanch posts, the BJP won two, recording fewer victories than independents, who stormed to power in six panchayats.
The BRS also performed better than the Congress and the BJP in Dubbak constituency. Led by BRS district president and Dubbak MLA Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, BRS-supported candidates won 37 panchayats out of 67. The Congress and the BJP won 11 and 10 villages respectively, while the remaining panchayats were bagged by independent candidates.
After their victory, newly elected BRS sarpanches and ward members made a beeline to former minister T Harish Rao’s residence in Siddipet. The candidates credited the 10-year rule of the BRS and the able guidance of Harish Rao for their success.
Congratulating the sarpanches and ward members, Harish Rao called upon them to remain accessible to villagers and act responsibly over the next five years to usher in all-round development in their respective villages.
BRS leaders expressed confidence that the party would perform even better in the third phase of elections scheduled to be held on December 17.
