Hyderabad: The BRS has announced a massive public meeting of Backward Classes in Karimnagar on August 8, demanding 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local body elections in the State. The party leaders will also meet President Droupadi Murmu and submit a representation seeking her approval to the two BC reservation Bills sent by the Telangana Legislature and include them in the Ninth Schedule.

Opposition leader in the Council S Madhusudhana Chari, former Ministers Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Gangula Kamalakar, V Srinivas Goud and other BC leaders convened a meeting at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday to discuss the way forward on the pending BC reservation Bills and ensure 42 per cent reservations for BCs in local body elections.

Speaking to media persons, Srinivas Yadav said the Congress leaders were raising curtains to a fresh drama with plans to visit Delhi on August 5, 6, and 7 to pressure the Centre to approve the BC reservation Bills. He said the Congress government had sent the BC reservation Bills for Presidential assent and then sent an ordinance for the Governor’s approval, despite knowing well that there would be a stalemate.

He accused the Congress of betraying BCs with empty promises. If the Congress was committed to providing BC reservations, he questioned why BCs were denied priority in Ministerial berths and nominated posts in the Congress government. He demanded that three Cabinet berths and 50 per cent of nominated posts should be given to BCs to prove the government’s sincerity.

Former Speaker S Madhusudhana Chari said the BRS would expose the Congress government’s dishonesty on BC quotas, while former Ministers Gangula Kamalakar and V Srinivas Goud said both Congress and BJP were colluding to stall the reservation hike. They demanded that the Ministers leaving for Delhi on August 5 must stay there until the BC reservation Bills are approved.

BRS leaders slammed the Congress government for rushing a caste census without transparency and delaying action on the BC reservation Bill. They warned that elections held without 42 per cent BC reservations would face strong resistance. They vowed to shield the BCs and take the fight to Delhi to expose the Congress government’s “double-speak” on social justice.
