Hyderabad: Rallying behind the people’s demand to establish a separate Secunderabad Municipal Corporation, BRS leaders warned the Congress government of serious consequences if the demand was not considered and if the Secunderabad region was broken into different divisions.
Former Minister and Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav minced no words in making the people’s intentions clear to the government, charging that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is conspiring to damage Secunderabad’s identity.
“For decades, people from all faiths have been living here together and peacefully. If the Chief Minister attempts to divide the peaceful region, the people will tear him apart,” Srinivas Yadav warned here on Sunday.
Addressing a meeting organised by Lashkar Zilla Sadhana Parishat here, the former Minister said the fight would continue until the government made an announcement on the establishment of the Secunderabad Municipal Corporation.
The Chief Minister cannot take unilateral decisions without consulting the people and disregarding their sentiments. In a democracy, people’s rights cannot be trampled upon, he added.
To press their demand, a peaceful rally would be held on January 17 from Secunderabad Railway Station to the Gandhi statue on MG Road, with participants carrying black badges and flags.
“Protests, road blockades, bandhs and demonstrations will be staged if the government fails to respond. We will launch fast-unto-death, if needed,” Srinivas Yadav said.
BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan made a 45-slide presentation and described the rich history of Secunderabad. He said the Congress government is facing serious criticism over the GHMC ward delimitation and the proposed merger of peripheral municipalities.
The entire process is an attack on constitutional values, democratic norms and the historic identity of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The ward delimitation is being carried out in a secretive and authoritarian manner, without public consultation or democratic debate, he alleged.
Delimitation was not a routine administrative exercise but a constitutionally significant process that affected political representation. By bypassing the State Election Commission, the government is violating the 74th Constitutional Amendment, the BRS MLC charged.
He expressed concern over the future of Secunderabad and strongly opposed any move to dilute or erase its identity by merging it into larger administrative units.
