Hyderabad: BRS Whip KP Vivekananda accused the Congress government of suppressing the Opposition and running the Assembly in a dictatorial and chaotic manner. He said the government had violated the privileges of the House and turned the session into a platform for self-praise while blocking all dissenting voices.
Speaking at Telangana Bhavan here on Wednesday, Vivekananda said the Assembly began without proper business and rushed through 13 bills without meaningful debate. He said the government tampered with the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) minutes and refused to release the original records despite the BRS demanding a 15-day session. “They said the Speaker would decide the duration, but even that authority was misused to restrict discussion,” he said.
He accused the Congress of hypocrisy, recalling that it had earlier called PPT presentations in the House unconstitutional but was delivering them after coming to power, while denying the BRS the same opportunity. “The Speaker clearly said he would not give the microphone to the BRS. This exposes the government’s fear of debate,” he added.
The BRS Whip stated that the proceedings were deliberately conducted to target the party chief and Leader of Opposition K Chandrashekhar Rao for five consecutive days. He said even the Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy and Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar had questioned inconsistencies in the government’s statements, particularly regarding release of funds for Mana Vooru-Mana Badi and Indiramma housing programmes.
Vivekananda said the BRS boycott exposed the government’s lack of seriousness, as the ruling party members were literally asleep after the Opposition walked out. “They have destroyed the sanctity and traditions of the House. They ran it like Gandhi Bhavan,” he said.
Targeting Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Vivekananda remarked that the latter used abusive language in the Assembly and made contradictory claims about the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation project. He reminded that the BRS had issued a breach-of-privilege notice against him. “Democracy cannot function when the Opposition is silenced,” he warned.
