Humanities option which includes fields like Economics, Public Policy and Journalism are good
options in the current situation.
Hyderabad: The pandemic has affected students a lot more than it has others. From schools and colleges being shut down, postponement of exams to being confined to their homes with zero practical experience and switching to online classes, the field of education is changing like never before. This is a time when students feel confused of their career choices. The things they thought they could achieve earlier don’t seem to be in their reach.
Sangeetha George, Senior Manager Student Support, GUS Education India, provides us some insights on how to choose a career in pandemic times.
Thriving careers:
Business and Humanities are good options in the current situation. When we say Humanities, we are talking about fields like Economics, Public Policy and Journalism. Digital Marketing is also a lucrative field with everything including brands going digital in the pandemic – you can learn to be a Digital Marketing Executive, Search Engine Optimisation Analyst, or Digital Marketing Writer. Graphic Designing is another great option. Online Teaching is also something that’s in great demand right now.
Opt online:
Choose courses that can be learnt online and don’t need practical experience for now. For example, it can get difficult if you choose fields like Film Studies, Mechanical Engineering or Medicine. Instead opt for courses that can be completed easily online.
Universities around the globe have become flexible too, so citing pandemic as the reason for more than a year’s gap on the resume is not going to go down well with employers down the line. Even if you want to study in University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), you can do one year online from India and then continue the other two years going to the university when things get better. Your course will still be valid and you will get a degree. In fact, it will get easier for students to get a visa if they are already doing a course online from a university. So, there’s no reason for students to stall.
Combination courses:
Combination courses are in trend. For instance, you can study Business Analytics along with Computer Science or Bio Technology. Focus on gaining more skills than knowledge, that way you will have more career options to choose from post-Covid times.
