Hyderabad: Students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will now have Coding as a skill module. Starting academic session 2021-22, the CBSE has introduced coding as a skill module of 12 hours duration in Classes VI-VIII.

According to the CBSE, the idea was to simplify the coding learning experience by nurturing design thinking, logical flow of ideas and applying it across the disciplines.

The Board felt that the foundation laid in the early years would help students build competencies in the areas of artificial intelligence, data science and other disciplines.

Faculty and student handbooks were created with support from Microsoft, so that students can work on applied projects and integrate coding across multiple subjects and make learning fun, the CBSE said in a circular issued to all its affiliated institutions on Thursday.

The handbook would cover real-life examples of coding, build exposure to ethics of coding, and provide exercises and applications using the open source MakeCode platform, it said.

Apart from coding, data science is being introduced as a skill module of 12 hours duration in Class VIII and as a skill subject in Classes IX to XII. The content for this was developed with support from Microsoft.

The CBSE, complying with recommendations of the new National Education Policy 2020 and to promote and develop skills among students, has introduced new skill modules and subjects. Presently, nine skills modules at middle school level, 18 skills subjects at secondary level and 38 skill subjects at the senior secondary level were being offered by the CBSE.

The Board has decided to waive off the application fee for introducing new skill subjects at the senior secondary level. With this, schools desirous to introduce skill subjects in Class XI can do so without submitting any fee to the CBSE.

In order to create uniformity in marks distribution of all skill subjects, from the academic session 2021-22 for Class XI, the CBSE decided that the marks distribution of all skill subjects being offered at the senior secondary level would be 60 marks for theory including 10 marks for employability skills and 40 marks for practicals and projects.

However, there would be no change in marks distribution for the present Class XII i.e., for session 2021-22. The revised marks distribution would be effective for Class XII from the academic session 2022-23, the CBSE said.
