Hyderabad: There are actors who live in the hearts of audiences for the roles they play, and there are a few who stay there for much more than that. Sai Kumar belongs to the latter. As he celebrated his 65th birthday on July 27, the day also became a marker of a rare journey: 50 years since he first appeared on the big screen.
It all began on a January day in 1975 with Devudu Chesina Pelli. From that small beginning as a child actor, Sai Kumar went on to build one of the most distinctive careers in South Indian cinema. Over the decades, he has been everything a story demanded; a hero, a villain, a character artist and a dubbing voice that turned lines into something unforgettable.
For many, the turning point in his career was his fiery role in “Police Story,” which made him a household name and gave him the title “Dialogue King.” From there came memorable films like Anthahpuram, Samanyudu and Prasthanam. His role as Loki Naidu in Prasthanam is still spoken of as an example of how a supporting character can carry as much weight as a hero.
This golden jubilee year has been a special one for him. During Sankranti, he played an important part in Sankranthiki Vasthunnam. Though it wasn’t a lead role, his presence gave the film depth and balance. A few months later, his portrayal of a lawyer in Court became one of the pillars on which that film stood. Both films proved once again that when Sai Kumar is part of a cast, the story gains an added layer.
Even after five decades, the pace at which he works is remarkable. His calendar is packed with Telugu films: Sambarala Yetigattu, Bad Boy Karthik, K Ramp, 12A Railway Colony, Dharmasthala Niyojakavargam, Rajadhi Raja, and projects with Kona Venkat and SV Krishna Reddy. He continues to be busy in Kannada cinema with Chowkidar and Satya S/O Harischandra and will soon appear alongside Shiva Rajkumar. In Tamil, he is part of Diesel and another film with Vikram Prabhu.
He will also be seen in the world of OTT with two web series: Mayasabha, directed by Deva Katta, and Kanya Sulkam, directed by Krish.
What makes this year even more special is a film with his son, Aadi. Titled Inspector Yugandhar, it will be a chance for audiences to see two generations of the same passion sharing a frame. Aadi’s solo film Shambhala is also on the way.
For 50 years, Sai Kumar has shown that a role is not about screen time. It is about how a moment stays long after the lights come back on. His voice has been a part of countless memories, his screen presence has anchored films across languages, and his dedication has made him one of the most respected actors in the South. He is a reminder that passion, when it is true, never fades.
On his 65th birthday, fans and colleagues are extending their heartfelt wishes to the rarest talent that the Telugu Film Industry has got.
