Hyderabad: The much-awaited inauguration of the Charlapalli railway station will take place on Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurating the terminal from New Delhi, while Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and G Kishan Reddy and other leaders will participate in the program on the site.
Initially, it was decided to inaugurate the new terminal on December 28. However, it was postponed following the death of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and seven-day mourning for the veteran politician.
The new terminal would provide passengers with improved services and contemporary amenities, aimed at decongesting the traffic at the city’s main stations, Secunderabad, Nampally and Kacheguda.
It was expected that the Charlapalli station, which was redeveloped at a cost of Rs 430 crore on a par with airports, would be opened in August last year after the road widening works in the vicinity. However, various reasons, including the land acquisition for developing approach road connectivity, led to the delay.
The Charlapalli station was developed with plans to operate 50 trains from the terminal which is equipped with modern amenities including lifts, escalators, 9 platforms and huge parking spaces.
Many trains are to commence from Charlapalli since the existing railway stations — Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda — are saturated due to huge inflow and outflow of traffic.
The new station building with a modern architectural facade will comprise six booking counters, separate waiting halls for women and men, as well as an upper-class waiting area and an executive lounge on the ground floor. The first floor will house a cafeteria, restaurant, feeding cabins for mothers and restroom facilities for both women and men.
The Charlapalli railway station will be the fourth major passenger terminal in the twin cities. The facility will not only reduce the burden at Secunderabad, Nampally and Kacheguda stations but also meet the growing requirements of the city’s population. The terminal’s proximity to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the upcoming Regional Ring Road (RRR) is expected to help passengers on all fronts.
