Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Tuesday posted the citizenship case of Vemulawada MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh after two weeks. The court agreed to a request from the State government to allow the latter to file an affidavit in the case through its additional advocate general.
During the hearing on Tuesday, the court was told that the German authorities had endorsed the affidavit of Ramesh dated December 15, 2020.
The German Embassy in Delhi has officially informed the Ministry of Home Affairs in this connection that “a person might hold a German Passport, but he or she does not have to be a German citizen.” This has been informed by the Union Home Ministry in its affidavit to the High Court on January 22, 2021.
In compliance with section 5 (1) (F) of the Citizenship Act, the Vemulawada MLA intimated the acquisition of citizenship of India to the local office of Citizenship Issues at Berlin in Germany through a letter dated March 3, 2009. He submitted the letter and the latest reconfirmation letter of the authority concerned dated February 13, 2020, to the High Court.
As per German laws, if a citizen voluntarily acquires the citizenship of another country, he shall automatically lose his citizenship of that country. The German authorities have already informed the Union Home Ministry that Ramesh is not a German citizen, but he may use the old passport.
