Hyderabad: At 8 am, as the City Central Library opens for the day, A Nagaraju walks in lugging his multiple competitive exams preparation books and unlocks his chair, which is chained to a tree on the library premises.
After his physical fitness training in the early hours, he starts his preparation for the exam of Sub Inspector of Police posts which he had failed to crack by five marks in his earlier attempt.
Like Nagaraju, there are many candidates who aspire for Central and State government jobs and spend most part of their day preparing for public service examinations in the library, which is located in heart of the city at Ashok Nagar. Not just inside the library, several students can be spotted engrossed in their preparation underneath trees within the library premises.
“I stay in a room of four and it is difficult to study there. The serene atmosphere outside the library makes it conducive for studying. I start my preparation at 8 am and continue till 9 pm, though the library closes at 8 pm. When it rains, I move to the reading room in the library,” says Nagaraju.
With a large number of hostels and coaching centres located in Ashok Nagar, Chikkadpally and Himayatnagar areas, the City Central Library has become a go-to place for youngsters preparing for competitive examinations. “Daily, we have over 500 visitors mostly candidates preparing for government jobs,” library officials say.
Established in 1961, City Central Library houses a staggering 2,26,704 books in eight languages — Telugu, English, Urdu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Hindi and Sanskrit.
Catering to the needs of visitors, the library has multiple sections including references, textbooks, preservation, senior citizens, periodicals, ladies and children’s sections as well. The preservation section is home to some of the oldest newspapers dating back to 1971. The library also has competitive exams preparation books as 60 per cent of its visitors constitute candidates aspiring for government jobs. Besides, a new collection of books is added every month. Students can avail of lifetime membership at just Rs 150 and they even can borrow books worth Rs 150 for a period of 14 days.
“Though new books are added, they are not enough. Hence, we have to wait for a long time to borrow books. Officials should add at least 50 copies of new books,” says Ramesh Kumar, who is preparing for bank jobs.
For candidates who wish to browse the internet, the library has an IT section providing the internet facility with 15 computers at just Rs 5 per hour. “The library officials should arrange guest lectures by experts on subjects concerned for the benefit of candidates preparing for public services exams,” says Venkat Nimala, who is aspiring for Group-I posts.
