Hyderabad: Several candidates, who appeared for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, termed questions in the paper-I tough and unpredictable. Aspirants found the questions to be twisted and indirect in nature.

The exam was held smoothly amid Covid-19 safety measures at 99 centres in the city on Sunday. While a total of 46,121 candidates applied for the exam in Hyderabad, 20,745 (44.97 per cent) were present in the forenoon session and 20,669 (44.81 per cent) attended the afternoon session.

Speaking to Telangana Today, M Sridhar who appeared for the test at a centre in Uppal, said the paper-I was very difficult in comparison with last year. He found questions in the polity section to be easy compared to other sections.

“More questions from agriculture, science and technology areas were asked in the paper-I. The questions in the paper-I were not conventional this time and direct questions were less. The paper-II was easy for aspirants who prepared well and is normal for an average candidate,” he said.

According to Brain Tree director Gopala Krishna, in paper-I questions appeared from all areas in the syllabus and 40 per cent of the questions were from economic and social development and history. There were also a significant number of questions from the applied aspects of general science.

“The questions seem to have been set to make the paper as unpredictable as possible. To be able to answer such a paper a candidate would need prolonged preparation. As the qualifying marks would depend upon the relative performance of the candidates it is expected that the cut-off mark would be lower than last year,” Gopala Krishna said.

Shikara Academy director Deepika Reddy said, “The paper-I was tough for candidates. There were more questions from ancient history than modern history. The questions from current affairs were less and two to three questions were asked on the schemes. This year, I expect the cut-off mark would be less than last year’s mark 98,” Deepika Reddy said.
