Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has reneged on his assurance of conducting dignified and issue-based debates in the Telangana Assembly after making controversial remarks against Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders inside and outside the House.
A controversy arose in the Assembly on Friday during question hour when BRS members raised queries on the Musi River Rejuvenation Project. Even as Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu was replying, the Chief Minister rose to intervene and gave a lengthy reply, prompting the BRS legislators to remind the Chair that it was question hour and that if the Chief Minister desired, the issue could be taken up as a separate discussion.
However, irritated by the interruption, Revanth Reddy accused the opposition of portraying the Musi project as a real estate venture and commented, “They have venom in their stomach, which is more dangerous than pollution. Please admit them in Vikarabad hospital for 10 days,” he urged the Chair.
Just a fortnight ago, Revanth Reddy had urged BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to attend Assembly discussions on the irrigation sector, particularly the river water-sharing dispute between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. During an informal interaction with the media, the Chief Minister had assured that the BRS chief would be accorded due respect and that debates would remain factual and free of personal attacks.
But the Chief Minister’s remarks at a meeting with ministers and legislators at Praja Bhavan on Thursday triggered a political storm. He made highly objectionable comments targeting K Chandrashekhar Rao and former Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, attracting wide condemnation. “Both BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao and former Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao should be hanged to death for compromising Telangana’s interests. I am saying this authoritatively,” Revanth Reddy said in his attack.
