Hyderabad: Contradicting what Excise officials said on not finding any drugs during recent raids on some parties, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday stuck to his rhetoric, with malice intended when he said some people were celebrating Diwali with ganja and cocaine.
Speaking after presenting appointment letters to newly recruited Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors of the Transport department here, he asked whether the people who fought for freedom or Telangana martyrs or those “consuming drugs in farm houses” should be role models.
In an indirect response to former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s recent statement that the people had realised what they lost, Revanth Reddy referred to a “senior personality’s” statement and the people had lost nothing.
Alleging that the previous government had failed to construct one residential school in 10 years, he claimed that his government was setting up integrated residential schools in 25 acres and spending about Rs.125 crore on each campus.
Also alleging that drugs were being smuggled across the State borders rampantly by road, particularly from Goa, the Chief Minister wanted Transport department officials to act tough on the offenders.
“It is our responsibility towards society. If the drug menace continues and children turn drug addicts, all our education and achievements will turn futile,” he said.
In many cases, when police catch offenders, it was noticed that engineering graduates and medical students were turning into drug addicts and were also involved in drug peddling. This was due to lack of orientation and awareness among the youth, he added.
