Hyderabad: The much awaited commencement of Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University (SSCTU), Mulugu, seems to be marked with a tepid response with only three seats filled during the recently concluded admission counselling.
The central university is commencing its operations from the academic year 2024-25 after coming into being through a Parliament Act in 2023. It has rolled out two programmes – BA (Hons) English and BA (Hons) Economics – with an intake of 25 in each programme. However, only one seat in the BA (Hons) English and two seats in BA (Hons) Economics could be filled during the counselling held in September.
This is despite several candidates registering for the admissions, which were done on the basis of the merit secured in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2024. The paltry number of seats filled in the first batch of programmes prompted the university to announce the spot admissions to fill up the vacant seats. The spot admission to 24 seats in BA (Hons) English and 23 seats in BA (Hons) Economics is on October 3.
Candidates qualified in the CUET-UG and fulfilling the eligibility criteria will be given first preference with second preference for candidates who passed the Class XII and meet the eligibility criteria i.e. 60 per cent marks for general, OBC and EWS candidates and pass marks for SC and ST categories.
“Preference I candidates will be given admission first in the order of their merit, category wise. If seats remain unfilled, preference II candidates will be considered in the order of merit,” the university said. Candidates seeking admission can report in-person at the Youth Training Centre (YTC building) (transit campus) located at Jakaram Village on Warangal- Mulugu road, at 9:30 am.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi last October announced setting up Central Tribal University in Mulugu district at a cost of Rs.900 crore, naming it after tribal deities Sammakka Sarakka. The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is mentoring the SSCTU, which is operating from the transit campus in the district.
Efforts to reach the UoH Controller of Exams for a comment on SSCTU admissions failed.
