Hyderabad: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, has successfully treated ventricular premature contractions (VPCs), a continuous double-beat rhythm where the heart feels like constantly skipping or thumping because of an extra heart for every normal one, in two-young patients.
A team of cardiologists led by Dr O Sai Satish, Senior Professor of Cardiology and Head of Unit I, Cardiology, NIMS, treated the medical condition using advanced 3D electro-anatomical mapping and radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
One of the patients, a 31-year young woman, had been suffering from frequent VPCs for about five years, which led to significant LV dysfunction, which is weakening of the left ventricular and is not pumping blood effectively. During pregnancy, the arrhythmia and reduced heart function placed her at high risk, and she had to undergo termination of pregnancy.
Another 20 year young man came with complaints of shortness of breath since 6 months ,diagnosed to have severe LV dysfunction and very high vpc burden of 40 percent and approached NIMS cardiology for definitive treatment Procedure and challenges State-of-the-art 3D mapping helped to precisely identify the arrhythmia focus.
