Hyderabad: Doctors at KIMS Hospital, Kondapur performed a high-risk, six-hour open-heart surgery to save the life of a 49-year-old woman, whose major heart artery was dangerously swollen, a press release said.
The patient’s aorta, which is the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body, had completely collapsed. As a result, the blood that should have flowed to the body was instead leaking backward into the heart, causing extreme pressure on the heart chambers leading to enlargement and strain, doctors said.
The surgeons removed the severely swollen aorta and the damaged aortic valve, replacing them with an artificial aorta and prosthetic valve in a procedure medically known as the Modified Bentall Procedure. The surgery lasted about six hours, and the patient recovered faster than expected, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Nisarga said.
