Jangaon: A councillor of the ruling Congress party was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault an elderly woman while in an inebriated state at Chagallu in the 9th ward of Station Ghanpur Municipality in the district.
According to the victim’s son, the accused councillor Choudarapalli Sampath Raj, said to be an associate of MLA Kadiyam Srihari, stripped off his clothes, left them in his car, and barged naked into the victim’s house late Monday night, attempting to sexually assault an elderly woman.
When she started shouting in fear, the accused fled into the bathroom of the house. Her family members who woke up from sleep on hearing the woman’s shouting latched the bathroom door from the outside trapping the councillor inside.
Enraged upon learning of the incident, the victim’s family members vandalised the councillor’s car and informed the local police. Upon receiving information police arrived at the scene and took Sampath Raj into custody.
Station Ghanpur CI Venu stated that based on the complaint filed by the victim’s son, a case has been registered against the accused under Sections 333 (house-trespass committed with the preparation to cause hurt, assault) and 74 (criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of the BNS and he was remanded to judicial custody.
The local BRS leaders strongly condemned the incident and demanded the officials to disqualify the accused from his councilor post.
