Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress has postponed the BC Declaration Vijayotsava Sabha scheduled to be held at Kamareddy on Monday, citing forecasts of heavy rains in the region. The party said a new date for the public meeting would be announced shortly.
Amidst uncertainty over extending 42 percent reservations to Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections, the Congress had planned a massive meeting at Kamareddy. Ministers and TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud had personally inspected the venue and planned elaborate arrangements.
After passing two bills in the Assembly to extend 42 percent reservations, the Congress wanted to claim credit for fulfilling the promise. Though the bills have been sent for the President’s assent, the party continues to face pressure to deliver on its commitment. The State government introduced two bills amending the Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, and the Municipalities Act in the Assembly on August 31 and in the Legislative Council on September 1.
Following approval in both Houses, the bills were sent to Raj Bhavan on September 2 for the Governor’s consent. Speculation spread on Thursday that the Governor had approved them, but Raj Bhavan sources dismissed it as false information.
Taking many by surprise, the Telangana Congress on Friday announced that the public meeting was being postponed due to the rain forecast.
