Hyderabad: The Director of Medical Education (DME), Telangana, Dr K Ramesh Reddy has directed all the tertiary teaching hospitals under the jurisdiction of DME to start preparing separate Obstetrics and Gyneacology (OBS) wards for Covid positive pregnant woman, in view of the surge of Covid infections due to the Omicron variant.

The directions were issued to all the Principals, Directors and Superintendents of various teaching hospitals under the control of DME

“During the earlier waves of Covid, separate wards were created in all maternity hospitals and OBG departments in attached teaching hospitals for managing Covid positive Obstetric cases. In view of the surge in the Covid cases, there is a need to keep these wards ready to treat these cases in the respective institutes,” Dr Reddy said.

All the teaching hospitals have General Medicine departments and ICUs to manage Covid cases and their help need to be taken for management by respective OBG departments. “The case being tested positive is not an indication to refer to hospitals in Hyderabad. Only those cases with severe comorbidities and who need multidisciplinary treatment only should be referred to Gandhi Hospital,” he said in the notice.

Dr Reddy made it clear that each referral case from the district to Gandhi Hospital will be critically reviewed. “Any Obstetric case coming to government hospital should be admitted and critically evaluated and if referral is needed, the hospital should inform the tertiary hospital concerned where the case is being referred and arrange an ambulance and then only shift,” he added.
