Yadadri-Bhongir: District Collector Pamela Satpathy on Wednesday urged farmers to take up the cultivation of crops that required low investment and yield a higher profit.
The Collectors was speaking after visiting the agriculture field of Balaswamy, a farmer who took up the cultivation of ten verities of crops on one-acre land at Sikhinder Nagar of Matakundur mandal in the district.
Interacting with the farmers there, she said they should adopt crop change in cultivation, which will also protect soil fertility. The farmers should also take up cultivation of crops which would minimize the use of pesticides and fertilizers that reduce expenditure, she added.
She said that the farmers can also earn more income than paddy cultivation by switching to alternative crops i.e. vegetables and pulses. Reminding that the Food Corporation of India(FCI) has already announced that parboiled varieties of paddy would not be purchased for the yasangi crop season, she advised the farmers to switch over to alternative crops, which would avoid hardship to them. The dry land crops-groundnut, green gram, sunflower and others would give yield from 90 to 120 days and help the farmers to improve their income.
She directed Agriculture Extension Officers to hold meetings of the farmers at the villages and create awareness among them on the cultivation of alternative crops.
