Hyderabad: What does a Chartered Accountant have to do with investigation into crime cases? Genuine doubt, right? Well, the Cyberabad Police is taking investigation into economic fraud cases a notch higher, with a specialized Forensic Auditors Unit being set up to help investigation officials. The special unit will provide scientific and technical support in major economic fraud cases related to companies being taken up by the Economic Offences Wing.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra, who felt the need for a special team of experts to help in solving economic offence cases sooner, directed the Crime Branch officials to set up a professional team, which is now on the first set of its cases.
“The Economic Offences Wing usually deals with major frauds involving companies and individuals. While investigating such cases, professional experts from the field will be needed. This need made us come up with a specialised unit with expert Chartered Accountants to help us probe in a more scientific and technical manner,” a senior official from the Crime Branch, Cyberabad, said.
The special unit’s services will be taken to deal with cases related to companies, balance sheets and funds flow study, stock exchanges, stock broking, bank statement analysis and other technical aspects.
Chartered Accountants having forensic knowledge and expertise are members of the unit and are providing technical support to the investigation officers.
“Earlier too with the help of chartered accountants and experts, cases were solved, but that association was not at a deeper level. The investigation officers sometimes may not be able to have all the technical knowledge while probing economic offence cases. Hence, the help of experts was sought. The team will help the investigation officer in the right direction,” the official said.
The unit, which was set up few days ago, has already started working and is giving out credible inputs to investigation officers in cases.
“The special team recently came into force and our collaboration is new. We have referred about five cases related to economic offences to the Forensic Auditors Unit seeking their expert advice and guidance. We are waiting for their report,” an official added.
