Cybercrime bust: How Karimnagar police tracked fraudster using bank account
To carry out their scheme, cybercriminals provided the victim with their Punjab National Bank account details, instructing them to transfer the money. Using this information, the police traced the accused's location and arrested Sadanshu Shekhar Mohanty in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He was subsequently brought to Karimnagar and presented before the court.
Karimnagar: A bank account helped the Karimnagar cybercrime police trace the details of cyber criminals and arrest one of the fraudsters.
As part of their strategy to extract money from the victim, cyber criminals had given their bank account details (Punjab National Bank) asking the victim to transfer the amount. Based on the bank account, police traced the whereabouts of the accused and arrested Sadanshu Shekhar Mohanty in Bhubaneswar of Odisha. He was brought to Karimnagar and produced before court.
According to police, a woman from Karimnagar got a call from an unknown person who claimed to be a customs officer. She was informed that a parcel in her name was seized at the Indira Gandhi Airport. ATM cards of different banks, drugs and passports were found in the parcel. Asking her to speak immediately with the Delhi police, the caller connected her to the “Delhi police” in a conference call. Believing the cyber criminals, she transferred Rs.21.80 lakh to the bank accounts suggested by them twice.
Realizing that she was cheated by cyber criminals, the victim lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police by dialing 1930. Based on the complaint, Karimnagar cybercrime police registered the case and began investigation. After finding that the accused were Bhubaneswar, a cybercrime police team led by Sub-Inspector Vamshikrishna visited Bhubaneswar and arrested Shekhar Mohanty.
The accused along with his brother Sarveshwara Mohanty had opened an account in Punjab National Bank on the name of Orple Appliances Private Limited. There are 24 cases on the bank accounts used for frauds in Telangana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Sarveshwara Mohanty is in Delhi police custody.
Cyber Security Bureau Director Shikha Goal and Karimnagar cybercrime police station SHO (DSP) Narsimha Reddy appreciated the police, who traced the case.
