Cyclone Montha hits Warangal, Hanamkonda hard, colonies inundated

Two people died and several areas in Warangal and Hanamkonda were submerged after heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Montha. Tanks breached, roads turned into streams, and rescue teams evacuated stranded residents as flooding disrupted normal life and damaged crops.

Hanamkonda: Life came to a grinding halt as the district headquarters was stuck in water logging due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Montha while two persons died in rain related incidents in erstwhile Warangal district.

Though the rains stopped, major part of Warangal and Hanamkonda was inundated with rainwater while many main and internal roads turned into nalas hitting vehicular traffic hard on Thursday. Schools and colleges were given a holiday.

A breach in Waddepally and Ooracheruvu tanks in Hanamkonda led to heavy waterlogging in Pragati Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar, Gopalpur, Sammaiah Nagar, Ram Nagar, 100 feet road and other areas. Residents in the colonies faced difficulties as flood water entered their homes.

With Chinna Waddapalli and Katta Mallanna tank overflowing, the road from Bhadrakali temple to Polytechnic College submerged, cutting off transportation to the temple. Vehicular traffic between Warangal-Hanamkonda stopped as Bondivagu and a nala at Mulugu road overflowed.

Rainwater entered houses in Desaipet, Paidipally, Santoshi Matha Colony, DK Nagar, Indira Nagar Colony, NN Nagar, Maisaiah Nagar, NTR Nagar, Sai Ganesh Colony, railway station area in Warangal. At many places residents complained of delayed response from rescue teams.

SDRF, police and municipal staff were carrying out relief work. Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation has set up 12 relief centres in east Warangal and the residents were shifted to the centres with the help of boats.

Cyclone Montha

In Jangaon, a young man and woman travelling on a motorbike washed away in floodwaters on the outskirts of Thimmampet in Station Ghanpur mandal. The man, Barigala Sivakumar escaped by holding onto a tree branch while the woman Bakka Sravya went missing and police were searching for her.

A private employee Appani Nagendram of Kothapalli in Hanamkonda fell into a canal dug to drain water into a culvert on Wednesday night and died. A 60 year old woman, G Suramma died in a wall collapse at Kondaparthy of Inavolu mandal.

Police and rescue teams rescued passengers on board RTC buses that were stuck in floodwaters on the main road at Upparapalli in Wardhannapet on Thursday morning and at Raghunathpally on Warangal-Hyderabad highway on Wednesday night.

Traffic disruption was reported on National Highway 365 from Narsampet to Mahabubabad. Standing crops were damaged on a large extent of lands in all the districts in erstwhile Warangal.
