Doctor takes up wrong surgery on pregnant woman in Karimnagar

This incident took place on Monday, but came to light on Tuesday when the woman's husband lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities

Karimnagar: In a case of medical negligence, a doctor at the Mother and Child Health Centre here almost performed a surgery on the wrong patient, a pregnant woman. The doctor stopped the procedure when the woman raised an alarm.

This incident took place on Monday, but came to light on Tuesday when the woman’s husband lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities.

According to hospital sources, Malathi, a native of Narsingapur in Veenavanka mandal and seven months into pregnancy, consulted the doctors at the MCHC on Thursday last when she developed pain in the stomach.

After scanning, doctors confirmed that she was carrying twins but one of the babies was sick. The doctors then decided to save the healthy child by stitching up the womb. On Monday morning, Malathi was shifted to the operation theatre and given sedation.

Meanwhile, a doctor, after going through the case-sheet of another woman, took up incision of Malathi’s stomach for surgery. Malathi, who was not completely under sedation, panicked and raised an alarm. The doctor stopped the procedure and called other doctors. Later, Malathi was shifted to the ward after stitching up her womb and the incision.

Enraged over the incident, her husband Narotham Reddy lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities. Despite repeated attempts by this correspondent, hospital authorities did not respond.

BJP stages dharna at MCHC in Karimnagar

BJP activists staged a dharna at the Mother and Child Health Centre here on Tuesday in protest against alleged negligence by a doctor who almost performed a surgery on a pregnant woman instead of another patient.

The BJP workers led by its district president Gangadi Krishna Reddy staged the protest and raised slogans against the hospital authorities.

Krishna Reddy found fault with the doctor for trying to perform a surgery on Malathi who did not require one. The condition of the pregnant woman turned serious following the doctor’s move, he alleged, and demanded a criminal case to be booked against the doctor besides suspension

BJP Mahila Morcha district president Choppari Jayasree, Kisan Morcha president Raji Reddy, Dubala Srinivas and others participated in the protest.
