Hyderabad: A 32-year-old woman in an advanced stage of pregnancy, with placenta blocking the cervix, was saved along with her preterm baby by a multi-specialty team of doctors from Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Jubilee Hills, a press release said.

The doctors led by senior obstetrics and gynecologist, Dr M Lakshmi Rathana performed a complex cesarean hysterectomy to save the life of the pregnant woman, who hailed from Barkas. Doctors said that the pregnant woman was earlier diagnosed in her fifth month of pregnancy with placenta percreta, a medical condition wherein the cervix is blocked.

The incidence of placenta percreta among pregnant women is about 7 per cent and the mortality and morbidity could be to the extent of 3.9 per cent, doctors said. The pregnant women might have developed the medical condition due to three C-sections for her previous deliveries.

Cesarean hysterectomy involving removal of the uterus immediately after delivery of the baby is a potential high-risk procedure. Therefore multidisciplinary intervention was necessary, says Dr Lakshmi Rathna. The mother and the healthy female baby have recovered and were discharged.
