Karimnagar: Lockdown was successfully implemented in erstwhile Karimnagar district on the first day on Wednesday. Besides main roads, all streets and bylanes wore a deserted look with people in their houses by 10 am when the lockdown came into force.
In the wake of a surge in Covid-19 cases, the State government took a decision imposing lockdown for 10 days from Wednesday onwards. All business establishments are allowed to operate from 6 am to 10 am every day. People returned to their houses by 10 am after purchasing vegetables, groceries and other essential commodities.
Karimnagar Commissionerate police deployed drone cameras to enforce lockdown. The police are also planning to deploy a mobile command control room which was used during first lockdown last year.
Police personnel were deployed at a few important places to monitor the situation and prevent movement of people. On the other hand, people praised the state government for imposing a lockdown to check the spread of the virus.
A private employee Mahesh said instead of opting for home isolation, people suffering from Covid were moving in the open violating norms. So, coronavirus had been rampant, he said and opined that lockdown would help break the chain.
A vegetable vendor Sridhar said they had to incur losses since vegetables were perishable items. It was not possible to sell all the vegetables within four hours. Customers would not show interest in purchasing stored vegetables, he opined.
