Khammam: Vegetable markets and grocery stores witnessed heavy rush in the wake of lockdown on Wednesday while there was not much public rush at liquor shops in the district.
Many wine shops were closed much before the lockdown period started, as the tipplers had purchased their required stock on Tuesday evening itself. Another reason for closing shops early was shortage of stock at many wine shops, a trader said.
“We told the public the shops would be open from 6 to 10 am but many have taken the present lockdown as a total lockdown which was imposed the previous year. Assuming a huge rush at wine shops police constables were deployed but what happened was contrary to their expectations”, Krishna Goud, an employee at a liquor shop said.
“It is not a new experience to have a lockdown, we had a total lockdown in 2020. But this time the lockdown is somewhat better as the government permitted shops selling essential commodities, liquor and others to be open for four hours”, K Hanumatha Rao of Gopalapuram.
Though the public used facemasks when they came out for buying essential commodities, physical distance was not maintained. Vehicular traffic on roads was as usual prior to lockdown as the public refrained from making frantic runs to procure daily needed items.
