The deceased was identified as G Malla Reddy of Mondikunta village in the mandal
Kothagudem: A 75-year-old man allegedly set himself ablaze in Aswapuram mandal in Kothagudem district on Wednesday over a land dispute and died on the way to hospital.
The deceased was identified as G Malla Reddy of Mondikunta village in the mandal. Sources said he had sold a piece of land to M Mangapathi Rao of the village 30 years ago. Later, he accused the buyer of encroaching on an acre of land in his possession and the dispute over the matter has been continuing for the past several years. Six years ago, a ‘panchayat’ to look into the dispute reportedly settled in favour of the buyer stating that no encroachment had taken place.
But for the past couple of days, Reddy was going to the residence of Rao demanding that he should clear the encroachment. When he went to Rao’s house on Wednesday, Reddy was reportedly abused by Rao. An upset Reddy doused himself with petrol in his field and died while being taken to hospital.
Aswapuram police booked a case and launched an investigation.
