Medak: The death of a farmer due to electrocution at Rukmapur village in Chegunta mandal on Tuesday has once again highlighted the failure of the State government to ensure quality power supply to the farming sector. The victim was identified as Mekala Krishnaiah (55).
Krishnaiah, who had taken up paddy cultivation on his four-acre field, found the borewell motor defunct due to the absence of power supply. In a bid to restore irrigation, he attempted to check the cable connection and came into contact with live electric wires. He was electrocuted and died on the spot.
The incident has triggered anger among farmers in the area, who said erratic and unreliable power supply was forcing them to take risks in the fields. They pointed out that during the previous BRS regime, farmers were assured quality power supply round the clock, free of cost, which had significantly reduced such incidents.
However, since the Congress Party took over the reins, round-the-clock power supply has come to a halt in most places, farmers alleged. Even where power is being supplied, they said it was highly erratic, leading to frequent disruptions and exposing farmers to serious safety hazards.
Krishnaiah is survived by his wife Lakshmi, a son and three daughters. The police registered a case.
