Warangal: The facade lighting project aimed at illuminating the historic Warangal Fort (Warangal Quila) is all set be completed by the end of February or March first week, said Warangal MLA Nannapuneni Narender.
Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, he said that he along with Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) Vice-Chairperson P Pravinya, officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) visited the Warangal Fort and inspected the ongoing works a couple of days ago.
“The facade lighting project and other development works at a cost of Rs nine crore had been taken up under the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) in April 2019. But due to some objections raised by the ASI, the works were stopped later. However, we have tried to convince the ASI to go ahead with the project and got its nod a couple days ago,” he said and added that the North Gate, West Gate of the Kakatiya era fort, Kushmal, a temple on the hilltop, ‘Keerthi Thoranams’ and street lights would illuminate one of the most sought after tourist destinations in State.
Though the sound and light show is being conducted at the several years at the fort, it is not attracting the tourists due to erratic conduct of the show, according to the sources.
“Though we wanted to give bright colours to the monuments to add beauty, the ASI was apprehensive about the possible adverse impact of the light on the monuments in the long run. In view of this, we have decided to provide warm light during the nights. However, there will be a display of multicolours on the special occasions like Independence Day and other days related to history,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
“Ever since the formation of Telangana State, the TRS government led by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is striving for the protection, preservation and promotion of the historical monuments like Warangal Fort,” MLA Narender added. He said that he had directed the KUDA officials to complete the illumination works at the earliest. The Quila was built by the Kakatiyas during the reign of King Ganapati Deva in the 13th century, and the facade lighting will allow visitors to stay even till the night, and dip in the past.
