Kothagudem: The bandh called by the CPI and CPI (ML) ND demanding arrest of the Kothagudem MLA’s son Vanama Raghavendra Rao, who was accused of abetting the familicide of a debt-ridden businessman, passed off peacefully in Kothagudem and Paloncha on Friday, though there were tense moments for a while.
The CPM, TDP, BJP, BSP and other parties supported the bandh. There has been a voluntary support to the bandh from all quarters in the society as all the business establishments, schools and colleges, petrol pumps, banks and wine shops were closed for the day. However, public and private transportation was not affected due to the bandh.
CPI leader K Sambasiva Rao, Sabir Pasha, Congress leaders A Krishna, Naga Seetharamulu, CPM leaders A Satyanarayana, Srinivas Reddy and others took part in a protest rally.
Police took the protesting leaders into custody and shifted them to the one-town police station in the town. Speaking to the media, the leaders expressed anger at the failure of the police for not arresting Raghavendra Rao, who was on the run.
They said Raghavendra Rao was named in a suicide note left by M Naga Ramakrishna who committed familicide at Old Paloncha in the district five days ago, accusing Raghavendra of causing mental agony by bringing pressure on him to send his wife to a hotel room in Hyderabad to get the property dispute he had with his elder sister resolved. Two others were also accused by the victim.
Meanwhile, the CPI leaders B Hemantha Rao and others also took out a protest rally in Khammam on the day demanding harshest punishment to the accused in the murder-suicide case. They said police should act fast to nab the absconding accused.
