Food and Agriculture Organization of UN has nominated Telangana State Seed and Organic Certification Authority Director K Keshavulu to serve in the scientific advisory panel at FAO global seeds conference

Hyderabad: Recognising various initiatives taken up by the Telangana government in seeds sector, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has nominated Telangana State Seed and Organic Certification Authority (TSSOCA) Director K Keshavulu to serve in the scientific advisory panel at FAO global seed conference to be held in November 2021.

The panel was constituted with experts associated with the seeds sector in various countries as members to give suggestions for chalking out an action plan with an aim to develop agriculture and the seeds sector in the developed and developing countries.

The action plan would be formulated at the global seeds conference in November. In February 2020, Keshavulu met Director General of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Qu Dongyu at its headquarters in Rome and apprised him of the strides that Telangana had made in the field of quality seed production.

Keshavulu explained the capacity of seed production and the scope for producing quality seed in the State to the FAO chief and informed that Telangana produces 60 per cent of the country’s seed requirement and over 400 national and international seed companies and processing plants are churning out more business through exports to other countries from the State.

Keshavulu said that over three lakh farmers from 1,500 villages produce seeds in seven lakh acres of land.

Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy complimented Keshavulu for being nominated in the panel. “Keshavulu’s nomination is a proud moment for Telangana and the country,” he said.
With this, Telangana seeds got recognition at the international level and it will also enable further development of the seeds industry in the State.
