Mahabubabad/Bayyaram: As many as nine farmers were injured when an auto-rickshaw overturned while they were going to a PACS centre for urea in Bayyaram mandal of the district on Wednesday.
The vehicle overturned on the outskirts of Kambalapally when 12 farmers from Gurimalla village were on their way to the Uppalapadu PACS sub-centre. Three farmers, Boda Lakshmi, V Suramma and Boda Kishan, sustained serious injuries.
All the injured were shifted to the Government District Hospital in Mahabubabad. Former MLA Haripriya Naik visited the hospital and inquired about the condition of the injured. She said the Congress government’s inefficiency was proving costly for farmers as it was unable to ensure adequate supply of urea.
It may be recalled that two farmers of Govindapuram in Gudur mandal of the district had died in a road accident on Sunday while travelling on a motorbike to a PACS for urea.
In Kothagudem, more than 500 farmers were visiting Paloncha PACS and Jagannadhapuram Rythu Vedika every day for urea. On Wednesday, due to shortage at the Paloncha society office, over 200 farmers waited since morning, but only one bag of urea was given to each farmer and many returned empty handed, said Paloncha Co-operative Society vice president Kampelli Kanakesh Patel.
“What is the point of giving just one bag of urea to a farmer holding five to 10 acres of land?” he asked, urging officials to ensure daily supply and allot more than two bags per farmer.
Kanakesh Patel also served free meals for the third consecutive day on Wednesday to farmers from far-flung areas of Paloncha mandal visiting the PACS office and Jagannadhapuram Rythu Vedika. He said the meals were provided as farmers were arriving on empty stomachs.
He appealed to BRS party ranks and kind-hearted donors in Telangana to extend support to farmers waiting for urea.
