Bhupalpally: Farmers of Elkeshwaram village in Mahadevapur mandal, who gave up their lands for the construction of the Chinna Kaleshwaram canal, staged a protest against the government demanding compensation on Wednesday. A woman farmer tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide during the protest.

The farmers have been demanding compensation for the last three days and on Wednesday, they tried to obstruct works on the Chinna Kaleshwaram canal. They alleged that the government was neither paying compensation nor allowing them to cultivate on their lands.

They were angry that no one was paying attention to their struggle for justice and their livelihoods were being destroyed for the sake of Chinna Kaleswaram project works. They alleged that police, revenue and irrigation officials were preventing them from even entering their fields. They also alleged that the construction works of the canal were taken up after deploying police forces.

The government has given the green signal for completion of the pending works of the Chinna Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project spending Rs. 571.57 crore with the potential to irrigate 63 villages in the Manthani Assembly Constituency.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the woman, Kamala, who consumed pesticide, is in a critical condition and is undergoing treatment in the local government hospital.
