Hyderabad: The long-standing water dispute between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is nearing a crucial juncture, as the final arguments in the case are set to commence.
The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II (KWDT-II) is currently adjudicating the reference under Section 89 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA) and the Further Terms of Reference as per the complaint filed by the State under Section 3 of the Inter-State River Water Disputes (ISRWD) Act.
The State (Telangana) has emphasised the need for an equitable allocation of water and the establishment of an operational protocol, which can only be effectively implemented after the KWDT-II undertakes a comprehensive allocation of water resources.
The State has highlighted that many of the issues in the Section 89 reference overlap with those in the Section 3 reference and can be categorised broadly, with the exception of issues related to the Godavari waters flowing into the Krishna basin.
The State, which has been awaiting resolution for over a decade, is seeking a speedy adjudication and final allocation to end all disputes between the two States.
The recent completion of the cross-examination of the last witness from Andhra Pradesh and the filing of IA No. 10 of 2024 for consolidation and joint hearing of both references marks a major step in the case.
The hearing on IA No. 10 of 2024 is scheduled for January 16, 2025 (Thursday). The State of Andhra Pradesh has objected to hearing the references together and prefers separate hearings. If the KWDT-II decides to proceed with separate hearings, Telangana will request that the reference under Section 3 be prioritised.
Following the decision due on January 16, the KWDT-II is expected to fix the next date for the commencement of final arguments in the case, bringing the prolonged dispute closer to a resolution.
