Rajanna-Sircilla: In a bizarre turn of events, five people were booked for allegedly attempting to use sorcery on a man to recover the dowry given to him at the time of his marriage. The incident took place in Venkatapur village of Yellareddypet mandal and came to light after an audio recording of a conversation between the accused and a self-styled godman went viral.
Ragula Harichandu, a resident of Venkatapur, married Asritha of Rajakanpet in Machareddy mandal of Kamareddy district on August 12, 2022. As part of the marriage, Asritha’s family reportedly gave 11 tolas of gold to Harichandu as dowry after selling a piece of land to a relative, Maddikunta Swaroopa, also of Kamareddy district.
However, the land was reportedly under dispute. Upon realising this, Swaroopa began pressuring Asritha’s family to return her money. Unable to do so, Swaroopa, in collusion with Asritha’s family, allegedly hatched a plan to get the couple divorced so they could demand the dowry back as baranam (maintenance).
As part of the plan, Swaroopa and other family members allegedly pressured Asritha to seek divorce, but she refused. Harichandu, on learning about the conspiracy, confronted Swaroopa, who then tried to convince him to divorce Asritha, citing her poor health.
When all attempts failed, the accused allegedly decided to harm Harichandu through sorcery. They reportedly paid Rs.1,000 online on April 14 this year to a self-styled godman, Baindla Rakesh of Venkatapur, and instructed him to either paralyse his limbs or eliminate him.
However, Rakesh recorded their conversation and later revealed the audio clip when Harichandu warned him of severe consequences. Upon learning of the conspiracy, Asritha approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Based on the complaint, police booked five persons: Asritha’s maternal uncles Adikam Sattaiah and Adikam Shankar Goud, and relatives Maddikunta Bala Goud, Maddikunta Swaroopa, and Maddikunta Sridhar Goud. A probe is underway.
