Hyderabad: Monsoon is when many travellers crave a quick escape into the wild. Misty forests, rain-washed landscapes and the chance to experience nature at its greenest make this season especially appealing for wildlife enthusiasts. But there is one catch, this is also the time when many of India’s popular national parks and tiger reserves close their gates.

Most parks shut their core zones during the monsoon months to protect breeding habitats, allow forests to regenerate and ensure visitor safety, as heavy rains often make roads inaccessible. As a result, travellers planning a jungle getaway in July are often disappointed to learn that their favourite reserves are off limits.

However, not all wildlife destinations go into hibernation. Several parks across the country keep their buffer zones or select areas open, offering visitors a chance to enjoy a monsoon safari without having to wait for the winter season.

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

One of the most popular destinations for wildlife enthusiasts, Tadoba keeps several buffer zones open during the rainy season. The lush green surroundings and relatively fewer tourists make monsoon safaris here a unique experience.

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra

Known for inspiring Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Pench remains accessible through select zones in July. The rains bring alive the forests, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh

For those seeking a quieter escape, Satpura offers a more serene safari experience. Dense forests, mist-covered landscapes and rich biodiversity make it a favourite among seasoned travellers.

Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka

Parts of Nagarhole, especially around the Kabini region, remain open during the monsoon. Visitors can spot elephants, deer and a variety of bird species while enjoying the beauty of the rain-soaked forests.

Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh

Although much of the park closes during the season, some buffer areas continue to welcome visitors. The reserve is known for its diverse wildlife and provides a refreshing alternative for those looking to experience the wilderness during the rains.
