Hyderabad: The Bachupally police on Wednesday arrested four persons, including a woman, for posing as influential people and duping a businessman to the tune of Rs.11 crore.
Police seized gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh, cash of Rs 2 lakh, five luxury cars and mobile phones from them.
The arrested persons were Smriti Simha, who posed as the chairperson of the International Human Rights Commission for South India, Raghava Reddy, who posed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Central Force, Ranadhir Reddy and Rama Krishna Reddy.
The complainant P. Veera Reddy, a businessman from Bachupally got acquainted with his neighbour, AR Vijay Kumar Reddy, the prime suspect who allegedly died by suicide on February 5 after the cheating came to light, and through him got close to Smriti, Vijay Kumar’s father Raghava Reddy and the other suspects, who were his relatives.
According to Veera Reddy, Vijay Kumar posing as a provisionally selected IPS officer and his associates had trapped him by displaying false social status and making up concocted stories of their professions. By the way of impersonation and forged references, they extorted Rs 11 from him on various occasions.
According to Madhapur DCP M.Venkateshwarlu, investigations revealed that Vijay Kumar, a computer programmer, had first got close with Smriti, who was separated from her husband and was running a supermarket at Borabanda. They eventually started living together.
After the cheating came to light, Vijay Kumar died by suicide at his parents’ house at Pragathi Nagar in Bachupally on February 5. A case was booked. Based on Veera Reddy’s complaint, the police arrested the suspects, while further investigation is on.
