Hyderabad: With hardly any traffic on the roads due to the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the Covid pandemic, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified the road restoration works across the city. Under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP), the civic body has already restored 10.50 km of main roads since lockdown came into force.
Jubilee Hills Road No 36, Hitec City flyover, Masab Tank road and part of the road under PVNR Expressway at pillar number 109 are some of the roads already restored or in the process of restoration during the lockdown. GHMC officials said that they have decided to utilise the lockdown period and pace up the works to improve the road conditions in different parts of the city.
“As many people are confined to their homes due to lockdown and the roads are free of vehicular movement, we are trying our best to restore roads on a war footing basis. Compared to the regular days, road restoration amid lockdown is moving at a brisk pace due to lesser traffic,” said a GHMC executive engineer. At several main roads, the GHMC is displaying phone numbers by installing signage. People can lodge complaints related to potholes, uneven road surfaces and roded bitumen by calling that number.
As a part of the road restoration exercise, officials of the civic body quality control wing were pressed into service to inspect the quality of roads being laid. They are compiling a report after a field-level inspection of the road stretches that are undergoing restoration. In the month of April, the GHMC has imposed a penalty of Rs 1.55 crore on CRMP agencies based on the reports submitted by officials of the quality control wing.
“The municipal corporation received instructions from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department following which officials were deployed to inspect the quality of works taken up by agencies,” said the executive engineer. Under CRMP, the civic body had entrusted the road repairs, maintenance and re-carpeting of 709 km to private agencies. The total contract value of the CRMP works is Rs 1,827 crore under a five-year contract.
