GHMC launches city-wide drive to rehabilitate beggars

The GHMC has initiated a rehabilitation programme targeting beggars across 30 circles in Hyderabad. The special drive, conducted at railway stations, bus stations, junctions and temple areas, identified 107 individuals.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday launched a rehabilitation programme for beggars across all 30 circles under a special drive at railway stations, bus stations, major junctions and temple areas, with police, traffic police, GHMC officials and representatives from NGOs taking part.

A press release said the special drive was conducted at Nampally Railway Station, Kachiguda Railway Station, KBR Park, Amberpet Junction, Ameerpet Junction, Balkampet Temple surroundings, Nanal Nagar Junction and Aramghar Junction.

A total of 107 beggars were identified during the drive and of them, 37 were shifted to Amma-Nanna Orphanage near Choutuppal, where they were provided with necessary medical examinations and other facilities.

Another 40 were admitted to various shelter homes within GHMC limits with the support of NGOs. The remaining individuals were counselled and sent back to their native places.

Officials stated the drive is aimed at the eradication of begging and would be continued regularly.
