Hyderabad: The GHMC has decided to collect e-waste directly from citizens’ doorsteps and has allotted responsibility for collecting e-waste to recycling companies as part of a doorstep pickup service.
On Thursday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan launched a new initiative, the e-Waste Ecosystem initiative at Happy and Big C electronic stores at Ameerpet, along with “Earth Sense” E-Waste recycler.
A press release said doorstep pickup service would be launched across GHMC soon and citizens could place a request for the collection of eWaste through the QR. The authorised recyclers, including Earth Sense, Recytronics, Pure Earth, Z Enviro, and Green Enviro, would take part in collection.
Under the initiative, GHMC facilitated the establishment of 30 drop boxes inside retail shops of BigC, BNew, Happi, LOT, Sangeetha, select, and Touch. It said citizens could get information about these drop points through QR and use the service to drop off unwanted eWaste.
GHMC officials said once a drop off was completed, the citizen would get an appreciation certificate and redeemable reward points, which could be redeemed at approved Self Help Groups. It said currently it was at Shilparamam and a few other agencies and it expected to increase the SHG coverage.
