Hyderabad: Tribal Welfare Minister Satyavathi Rathod accused the BJP government at the Centre for denying and obstructing the tribals from exercising their rights. She demanded that the union government bring necessary amendments to the existing laws and increase reservations for tribals on the basis of population, failing which people will teach a befitting lesson to the BJP.
The Telangana government passed a resolution in the State Assembly approving revision of reservations to 10 per cent for STs, which has been pending with the Centre. The Minister said due to the delay, several tribal youths were losing educational and employment opportunities.
Speaking to mediapersons after participating in Bhog Bandar as part of Sant Sevalal Maharaj’s birth anniversary held at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, the Minister pointed out that Telangana was the only State to officially celebrate the birth anniversary of Sant Sevalal Maharaj. She said the State government had also spent Rs 364 crore in the last four years for organising Sammakka Saralamma Jatara including Rs 75 crore released this year. Apart from implementing numerous welfare schemes, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was also implementing ST sub-plan and allocated Rs 12,300 crore towards ST Special Development Fund.
Satyavathi Rathod ridiculed the claims of the BJP leaders who were promising to construct Sevalal Bhavans after coming to power in Telangana. Pointing out that the BJP was in power in 18 States, she dared them to construct them in all those States. She also questioned in how many States the BJP was celebrating the birth anniversary of Sant Sevalal Maharaj. She said the BJP government did not even fulfill the promise of a tribal university in Telangana. She said the Chief Minister would soon inaugurate Banjara and Komuram Bheem Bhavans in Hyderabad.
Former MP Sitharam Naik among others also spoke.
