Hyderabad: Google Maps is receiving a major Gemini upgrade designed to make navigation smarter and more intuitive. Google is introducing the first hands-free, conversational driving experience in Maps, powered by Gemini and its extensive real-world data. The company says the new experience will feel like having a knowledgeable passenger who can assist confidently throughout the journey.
Here are four new updates coming to Google Maps:
Hands-free help for everyday tasks
Google is bringing Gemini, its AI assistant, to the hands-free driving experience within the Maps app. Users will now find it even easier to look up places along their route, check for available EV chargers, or, on Android, share their ETA with contacts — all without touching the screen.
Gemini can manage multi-step tasks such as: “Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, somewhere within a couple of miles? What’s parking like there?” followed by, “OK, let’s go there.” Users can also request: “Can you add a calendar event for soccer practice tomorrow at 5 p.m.?”
With permission, Gemini syncs with Calendar and adds events automatically. It can also pull up dish recommendations at a restaurant, sports scores, or the latest news — all without drivers taking their hands off the wheel.
To improve reliability, Google Maps is also making it easier for drivers to report traffic disruptions. Users can simply say, “I see an accident,” “There’s flooding ahead,” or “Watch out for that slowdown” to log incidents instantly. Gemini-assisted navigation begins rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS in all regions where Gemini is available, with Android Auto support to follow.
Navigate with real-world landmarks
To make navigation clearer, Google Maps will now highlight easily recognisable landmarks — such as restaurants, gas stations, and prominent buildings — along the route. Instead of vague instructions like “turn right in 500 feet,” drivers will receive more intuitive directions such as “turn right after Thai Siam Restaurant,” which will also appear highlighted on the map.
Gemini uses updated information from over 250 million places in Google Maps and cross-references it with Street View imagery to select landmarks that are clearly visible from the road. Landmark-based navigation is rolling out now in the U.S. on Android and iOS.
Beat traffic before getting stuck
Google Maps will now proactively alert users of road disruptions — even when they’re not actively navigating. This includes unexpected closures, crashes, or heavy traffic. The feature is currently rolling out in the U.S. on Android.
Explore places using Lens with Gemini
Once users reach their destination, Gemini can help them explore nearby spots. By tapping the camera icon in the Maps search bar and pointing their phone at restaurants, cafes, shops, or landmarks, users can identify these places instantly.
When pins appear, they can tap the mic and ask conversational questions like: “What is this place and why is it popular?” or “What’s the vibe inside?” Combining Gemini’s capabilities with Google Maps’ deep understanding of places worldwide provides quick insights, helping users decide on the spot whether a place is worth visiting. Lens built with Gemini will begin rolling out later this month in the U.S. on Android and iOS.
Google says the upgrades will make journeys more productive, intuitive, and enjoyable, empowering users to navigate with greater confidence.
