Hyderabad: Google is rolling out a new way to edit images in Google Photos, allowing users to simply ask Photos to make edits using text or voice commands. The feature, powered by Gemini AI, will debut first on the upcoming Pixel 10 in the U.S.
With this update, users no longer need to manually select tools or adjust sliders. Instead, they can describe the edits they want — from simple fixes such as “remove the cars in the background” to broader adjustments like “restore this old photo.” Multiple requests can be combined in a single prompt, and follow-up instructions can be added to fine-tune results.
The redesigned photo editor also supports gestures and one-tap suggestions. Users can tap or circle parts of an image to receive context-specific recommendations, such as erasing a distraction. For those unsure where to start, Photos can generate improvements with prompts like “make it better.”
Beyond corrective edits, Google Photos’ conversational editing allows more creative changes, such as swapping backgrounds or adding playful elements like hats or sunglasses — all without worrying about tool selection.
To further strengthen transparency around AI-generated edits, Google is extending support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos. Pixel 10 will be the first device to embed these credentials directly in the native camera app for both AI and non-AI images. This comes in addition to existing IPTC metadata for AI-edited photos and SynthID watermarks for images altered with Google’s Reimagine tool.
The company says the combination of natural language editing and content authenticity standards marks a significant step forward in making photo editing more accessible, creative, and trustworthy.
