Kothagudem: Four years have passed since the Government Medical College was inaugurated in Kothagudem district, but the lack of its own building and hostel facilities is leading to severe criticism, besides troubling students.
It might be noted that the previous BRS government established the medical college at Paloncha near the district headquarters in 2021. The National Medical Commission (NMC) granted permission for 150 MBBS seats to the college affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS)
The first batch of classes started on November 15, 2022. Currently, four batches of students are studying in the college and classes are being conducted in a building meant for the Government Nursing College. The nursing college is being run in Kothagudem.
The construction of the medical college building, administrative office, laboratories, hostels and others was taken up four years ago on the vast land opposite the Nursing College. Though the construction progressed rapidly for two years, it was delayed afterwards.
The non-payment of bills to the contractor by the government on time, alleged lack of coordination and supervision among the relevant departments is said to be the reason for the delay in construction.
Speaking to Telangana Today, PDSU district president Burra Veerabhadram stated that the lack of access to basic facilities required for medical education, such as dedicated classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, department blocks, seminar halls and faculty rooms posing a problem for students.
Apart from Telangana, students from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and other States are also studying in the college. Parents of students are complaining that the students are facing difficulties in staying in private hostels at Paloncha and other places, he said.
The government should take steps to expedite the work, complete the medical college construction and make it available to the students at least by the beginning of this academic year, he demanded.
