Adilabad: Teachers working in government schools have come under the scanner for misbehaving with students. In recent separate instances, cases were registered against two teachers on charges of harassing girls and seeking sexual favours over the past fortnight. In the first incident, a teacher was pestering students by touching them inappropriately at a school. The distressed students approached the SHE Team, which in turn arrested the teacher after registering a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
In the second instance, a case was booked against a teacher of a ZPHS in Adilabad town on charges of sending obscene messages to girl students on WhatsApp. This case was also booked under provisions of the POCSO Act on April 10. Family members of the victims lodged a complaint against the teacher. Another teacher was arrested for allegedly harassing students at a school in Indervelli mandal.
Earlier, a secondary grade teacher was booked on charges of misbehaving with students at a school in Utnoor mandal. A case was registered against two government teachers and a private teacher from two different schools in Mavala mandal in 2025. Police said that 10 teachers were booked under the POCSO Act in Adilabad district alone in the last two years, reflecting the gravity of the issue.
Parents expressed concern over the safety of students. They regretted that sending girl children to government schools was fraught with risks. They urged education officials to step up vigil against erring teachers, besides installing surveillance systems in schools. They stated that a few students were coming forward to report the crimes, but many offences were going unreported.
Education officials said that training was being given to teachers on how to behave with students at regular intervals. They stated that steps were being taken to prevent inconvenience to students studying in government schools. They noted that stern action would be initiated against teachers found guilty of sexual offences.
Police advised students to report objectionable behaviour of teachers by contacting the police through the Dial 100 service or SHE Teams. They stated that the identity of informants and victims would not be disclosed.
