Hyderabad: Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy on Wednesday assured to take the issue of increasing the number of seats in RGUKT-Basara in Nirmal district to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.
She said the institute was ranked 36th out of 1,000 universities in the country which indicates the quality of education being provided to students.
Responding to questions raised in the Assembly here, Sabitha Indra Reddy said admissions in RGUKT-Basara were being given to students of government schools who perform well in the SSC exams based on their score. She stated that though the previous governments provided admissions upto 2,000 students in the initial days after opening of the institute, the admissions were scaled down to 1,000 seats in 2010 due to inadequate infrastructure. The Chief Minister, however, approved the proposal to increase the seats to 1,500 in 2018 after bringing about improvement in the infrastructure on the campus.
“Considering the demand, we will examine the issue of increasing the seats to 2,000 and take a decision after obtaining approval from the Chief Minister,” she said. Constructed on a campus of 272 acres, the institute is equipped with a post office, a bank and a 30-bed hospital to cater to the needs of students and staff. Nearly 55 per cent students are getting campus placements after completing their studies.
Around 220 students from the RGUKT-Basara got government jobs in different departments like Panchayat Raj, Roads and Buildings, and Irrigation departments through the recruitment taken up by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC).
