Khammam:Forest officials on Thursday came to the rescue of a graylangur that was kept captive at BallepalliRamalayam in Khammam city after being alerted by an animal welfare activist.
The activist, AdulapuramGoutham of Stray Animal Foundation of India NGO, told Telangana Today that the langur had been kept in a cage for nearly one year.
After receiving information about this, he informed the District Forest Officer (DFO), who in turn directed the Forest Range Officer (FRO) concerned to visit the location to rescue the langur.Goutham said langurs were wild animals protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
When contacted, FRO Nageshwar Rao, who visited the area where the animal was kept, said the langur was brought there by the local Ramalayam Temple committee to address the money menace on the temple premises.
The langur, which was domesticated, was in good health and eating well. However, it would be shifted to wild environs like Kinnerasani sanctuary or any other place after consulting the temple committee on Friday following the directions of the DFO, he said.
